Tips on Cymbidium Culture

By the late R. L. Hall Jr.

Cymbidiums grow out-of-doors all year long in this area of Florida.  They will withstand temperatures down to 28F and up to 95F without serious damage.

Light:

Full morning sun and filtered sun the rest of the day.

Water:

Cymbidiums like lots of water!  During the growing season (March to October) I water mine every other day.  When bloom spikes begin to form, I reduce watering.  Too much or not enough water will cause the buds to blast.  Your cymbidiums must have good drainage at all times

Fertilizer:

Use as directed on container.  February through June use balanced 20-20-20 or 8-8-8.  July through November use Super Bloom Booster.  Three times a year top dress with Milgorganite (April, July & September).

Bloom spikes are set in August and the first part of September.  Watering late (near dark) helps cool bulbs which is necessary to get bloom spikes to set.  A difference of 20-25 degrees between day and night temperatures is needed for good blooming.

Repot every 5-6 years late in April.  Plants do not like to be disturbed and may not bloom the first year after.

Media:

2 parts Canadian peat

2 parts Perlite or Airlite

1 part white sand
